Earlier this month, Victoria ISD’s Advanced Academics department honored its graduating Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students. 31 students from Victoria West High School and 24 students from Victoria East High School were honored at their respective schools.

“This year’s senior class has been a joy to watch persevere through all of life’s normal difficulties and the added ones of the past two years,” said Keith Morgan, AVID elective teacher at Victoria West High School. “I can’t wait to watch them use that determination to reach their “and”.

Students, parents, teachers, administrators and school board members gathered for an intimate awards ceremony. Students gave speeches regarding how the program has benefited them through the years and prepared them for life post-graduation.

“The VEHS Class of 2022 has overcome so many obstacles throughout the educational journey. They are all pursuing their “&” after graduation,” said Amanda Blaschke, AVID elective teacher at Victoria East High School. “I am so proud of them and excited to watch them continue to reach their college and career goals.”

AVID is an elective course available to students, preparing them for academic success beyond high school. Students learn skills such as writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization, note taking, reading skills, self-advocacy and goal setting in order to prepare them for college readiness and success in a global society.

For the 2021-22 school year, there were more than 1,300 AVID students amongst VISD’s seven AVID sites. In the 2022-23 school year, there will be more than 1,800 AVID students in the AVID program.

“VISD is proud of our graduating AVID seniors,” said Elise Tate, Advanced Academic Director at VISD. “They have an abundance of things to celebrate that they have accomplished through much persistence and determination. They have SO much to be proud of!”

AVID is currently available to all students in grades six through 12, as well as Torres Elementary.
