Leslie

In a significant milestone for Victoria Independent School District (VISD), we proudly celebrate the first graduate of the visionary VISD BRIDGE Program.

Leslie Ortiz, a devoted science teacher at STEM Middle School, exemplifies the program's success as she prepares to graduate from Grand Canyon University on March 15, 2024.

The VISD BRIDGE Program is a trailblazing initiative addressing the critical shortage of qualified teachers in our district. By offering a unique pathway for paraprofessionals and substitutes within VISD to become certified teachers, this program hinges on the strength of recommendations from campus administrators. Leslie Ortiz, with her unwavering dedication and passion for education, is a shining example of the program's potential.

Leslie's journey through the BRIDGE Program showcases not only her personal and professional growth but also highlights the program's profound impact on educators and students alike. By enabling passionate educators like Leslie to advance their qualifications, VISD is directly enhancing the quality of education delivered to our students.

As we prepare to celebrate Leslie's achievement, we reflect on the broader implications of the BRIDGE Program. This initiative is more than just a pathway to certification; it's a testament to VISD's commitment to empowering educators, enriching student experiences, and steadfastly adhering to our strategic plan's emphasis on innovative approaches to education.

In light of this momentous occasion, we spoke with Leslie Ortiz, delving into her experiences and insights.

Q: What inspired you to join the VISD BRIDGE Program, and how has it impacted your journey as an educator?

LO: "The thing that inspired me to join the BRIDGE program was the opportunity it offered to finish my schooling, coupled with my passion for teaching and working with kids. My husband and children were my biggest inspirations, always encouraging me not to quit. The program has kept me busy juggling school meetings, mommy duties, college courses, and maintaining a balance in life. It's been a challenge, but it's been incredibly rewarding."

Q: Can you share a particularly memorable experience or challenge you faced during the program, and how it has shaped your teaching philosophy?

LO:  "One memorable challenge I faced was dealing with behavior in the classroom. I've learned that being firm and consistent from the outset sets the tone for a productive learning environment. Every day presents its challenges, but I've learned to push through and adapt. It has strengthened my resolve and shaped my teaching philosophy to be proactive and resilient."

Q: How do you believe your growth through the BRIDGE Program will influence your students at STEM Middle School?

LO:  "I believe my growth through the BRIDGE Program has equipped me with valuable knowledge and skills that I can directly apply in the classroom. Every new thing I learn enhances my ability to guide my students effectively. I have faith in my students at STEM Middle School, and I'm confident that with the right guidance, they will achieve greatness."

Q: What advice would you give to other paraprofessionals or substitutes in VISD considering the BRIDGE Program?

LO: "My advice would be simple: Do it. The journey may seem daunting, but the rewards are immeasurable. Don't hesitate to pursue your dreams because time waits for no one. Someone once told me that if you sleep on a plan, it might never come to fruition. So wake up and seize the opportunity."

Q: As the first graduate of this pioneering program, how do you feel about setting a precedent for future educators in VISD?

LO: "I feel immensely proud to have set a precedent for future educators in VISD. This program opens doors for individuals who may have felt that higher education was out of reach. It's a testament to VISD's commitment to nurturing talent and providing opportunities for growth. I believe that as more people embrace this initiative, our educational community will thrive, and together, we'll continue to make a positive impact."

We are confident that Leslie’s story will inspire and motivate others within our district. Her graduation is not just a personal achievement but a landmark moment for VISD, symbolizing our commitment to educational innovation and excellence.

With this accomplishment, Leslie will now transition into the UNITE program of the VISD Academy to Certify Teachers. The UNITE program is VISD’s pathway for our employees who already have a bachelor’s degree or higher and are seeking Texas teacher certification. Participants earn 100% of a Zero-Year teacher’s salary while completing rigorous coursework administered by their self-selected alternative certification program. VISD will provide an instructional coach and mentor as well as job-embedded professional development including access to all VISD Core Courses.

The VISD Academy to Certify Teachers’ BRIDGE Program has emerged as a beacon of hope for aspiring educators seeking to make a difference in the lives of students. This is an excellent opportunity for paraprofessionals and substitutes who are passionate about teaching to take the next step in their careers.
