Q and McNeill

On March 31, 2023, Superintendent Dr. Shepherd and District Medical Consultant Dr. John McNeill assisted Career and Technical Education Health Science Teacher Rachel Lowrey with a Medical Mystery lesson for students in Health Science classes at the Career and Technical Institute (CTI).

The Medical Mystery was Dr. Shepherd’s real-life example of heart-related health issues, surgery, and recovery.

As Dr. Shepherd shared his health history, and as the class delved deeper into the mystery, they debated and discussed their theories, each one building on the last. Dr. McNeill provided detailed medical information and answered questions from students. Mrs. Lowrey set the stage by providing foundational lessons prior to the Medical Mystery lesson.

“Real-life experiences have an incredible impact on student learning,” said Lowrey. “Being able to formulate their own questions and truly investigate made this lesson incredible, and will have a lasting impact on their confidence as they move into providing care. They also have a better understanding of how important it is that they take care of themselves.”

The exercise was a valuable learning experience, giving the students a taste of what it's like to work through a real-life medical mystery. As they left the classroom that day, they felt confident and excited to tackle whatever challenges lay ahead in their healthcare careers.

Thank you, Dr. Shepherd, for sharing your personal health information to provide an amazing learning opportunity for students.
