Torres Career Day

On Friday, April 14, Torres Elementary hosted a Career Day for all PK- 5th-grade students organized by Torres Counselor Kayla Henery with the assistance of Music Teacher Maricia Startz.

Inside, students and teachers rotated their classes to different rooms in the school to hear about different careers. Students were able to talk to carpenters, veterinary technicians, a paramedic from Victoria College, and HEB pharmacy technicians. Also in attendance were careers that students might not get to learn about every day, like a funeral home director, a judge, and a baker! Students got to hear from many different community members about all sorts of aspects of the job, as well as get some hands-on experience.

Outside, students were able to Touch-A-Truck with the Victoria Fire and Police Departments onsite, as well as White Trash Services having waste collection vehicles present. Students not only were able to learn about the different careers but see firsthand how these workers utilized their equipment and vehicles to do their jobs.

“Elementary school is a crucial time to begin exposing students to a variety of careers and instilling a culture of self-awareness and empowerment,” said Henery. “Career development begins during early childhood and involves a life-long process of exploration and consideration.  Our mission at Torres Elementary School is to provide all students with the resources and materials they need to be successful, lifelong learners.”

VISD campuses, and the District, are committed to providing multiple opportunities of exposure for students. Exposure is crucial for students as it helps them explore the range of opportunities available to them. By exposing students to a variety of experiences, such as different career paths, they gain a better understanding of what their strengths and interests may be.

Exposure to diverse experiences can broaden their perspectives, increase their cultural awareness, and enhance their interpersonal skills. In today's fast-paced and ever-changing world, it is important for students to have access to a wide range of opportunities so they can be well-informed and equipped to make informed choices about their future.

Torres Elementary would like to extend a very big THANK YOU to our community partners for taking time out of your schedule to enrich our students’ lives.
