victoria west wrestling regionals

The Victoria West High School Wrestling Team had a successful day on Thursday, February 2, when they brought home multiple district titles from the District 15-5A Wrestling Tournament at Corpus Christi Carrol.

Wyatt Mican, Victoria West senior, came home with a gold medal in the 165-pound weight class. Mican has been wrestling since his freshman year. “I feel like I’m pretty prepared, and I also feel like I’ve grown more this year than any other,” said Mican. “I feel like I can make it to state and that’s ultimately what I’ve been planning to do since I started wrestling my freshman year. I know what I’m going to do, now I just have to do it.”

Kamauri Montgomery, VWHS junior, also took home a gold medal in the 190-weight class. This is Kamauri’s first year wrestling. “Coach Weaver convinced me to try it,” said Montgomery. “I hope to reach the state tourney. My favorite part about wrestling is learning new throwing and pinning techniques from Coach TK (Anthony Kuharski).

Landen Sheffel, a senior at West, took home 2nd place in the 175 Class. “One thing that I hope to achieve is to place at regionals and state and do better than I did last year,” said Sheffel, who will be making his second appearance at the regional tournament. When asked what he has done to prepare for the tournament, he said, “I worked on myself to stay in shape and to mentally and physically do better.”

Ivan Yanez, West senior, won 3rd place in the 138 Class. “I have been preparing for regionals since I joined wresting my junior year, which doesn’t seem like a long time, but I have put a lot of effort and gave it my all in practice,” said Yanez. “I hope to place, qualify for state, and prove that months of practice have not been wasted.”

Jessica Yanez, West junior, took home a bronze medal in the Girls 138 class. Jessica works hard with her brother Ivan to improve and hopes to place into the top 5 at the regional tournament and move on to compete at state.

Like Kamauri, this is Jessica’s first year wrestling. “I would like to stress that both Jessica Yanez and Kamauri Montgomery are first year wrestlers," said West Head Wrestling Coach Anthony Kuharski. “It is unheard of for first year athletes to place at the district tourney, much less win like Kamauri did.”

All of these wrestlers will be headed to Austin this weekend for the regional tournament at the Austin Delco Center on February 10-11.

Good luck to these West Warrior Wrestlers!
