VISD Dudley pumpkin contest

Last week, Dudley Elementary School held a Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest. For the contest, students chose a character from a book or story and worked together with family members to transform a pumpkin (or pumpkins) into that character.

“This is my first year at Dudley Elementary and the participation in the pumpkin contest far exceeded my expectations,” said Dudley and Hopkins Elementary Librarian Dara Pena. “Since it’s been years since Dudley’s had a contest, I wanted to go ahead and bring it to both Dudley and Hopkins this year.”

The contest was split into two sections with the pre-K through 1st grade students in one section and the 2nd through 5th grade students in another. All Dudley students and staff had the opportunity to go through and choose their four favorite pumpkins from each section. After the votes were tallied, the top 3 from each section won a Walmart gift card.

In the pre-k through 1st grade section:

The 1st place pumpkin went to Colton Zeine with “Maleficent” from Sleeping Beauty.

The 2nd place pumpkin went to Gael Martinez Rangel with “Baby Yoda” from Yoda.

The 3rd place pumpkin went to Royal Pacheco with “The Demogorgon” from Stranger Things.

In the 2nd through 5th grade section:

The 1st place pumpkin went to Xaralyn Salas with “Cinderella’s Carriage” from Cinderella.

The 2nd place pumpkin went to Noah Salinas with “Tim Woodsman” from Wizard of Oz.

The 3rd place pumpkin went to Logan Hartman with “Big Bad Wolf” from Bad Guys

“I am thankful so many families chose to participate and make the Book Character Pumpkin Contest a success,” said Pena. “Dudley and Hopkins families did amazing!”

Congratulations to the winners! We are #VISDProud of all of the participants for their hard work and creativity!
