dia de los muertos winners

Stroman STEM Academy’s 6th-grade English, Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) classes completed “The Día Le Los Muertos Project” on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Students completed the project-based assignment for Hispanic Heritage Month, recognized annually by Americans from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

For the assignment, students were required to choose a role model, idol or loved one that has passed away, design a visual display commemorating the individual and write a short paper about why they chose this individual.

A total of 126 projects were displayed at the Student Center at Victoria College (VC) beginning at 1 p.m. Judging took place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the winners were announced at 5 p.m. followed by a parent open house.

The top three projects selected by judges received gift baskets donated by the VISD Education Foundation. First place was awarded to Arabella Smith, second place went to Elviz Salazar and third place was Garrett Garcia.

Victoria ISD would like to extend a “thank you” to the judges: The Envied Ones Motorcycle Club, Crossroads Business and Education Connection (CBEC) and the VISD Education Foundation.
