Victoria West High School has named Cody McDonald as its next head coach of the Warrior Boys Basketball program.

“This was a slam dunk to me,” said Spencer Gantt, Victoria ISD athletic director. “Cody has done an outstanding job for us and we can’t wait for him to take the reigns. It’s a great opportunity for him and a big move for us a district.”

McDonald will be entering his eighth overall year as a teacher and coach at Victoria West. This will be his third year as a head coach in his career.

“This job is like a dream job for me,” McDonald said of the position. “I started my career at Victoria West and have coached here for almost my entire career, so I’m excited to continue traditions with a great group of players, student-athletes, and a great coaching staff.”

McDonald was also most recently honored as Victoria ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year in April 2021.

“Coach McDonald is an incredibly gifted teacher who applies his abilities to teach students in the classroom and on the court,” said Paul Fleener, Victoria West principal. “We are very excited about his promotion to this position and the great things that will be happening in the Warrior Boys Basketball program.”

McDonald has a decade’s worth of experience coaching and teaching. He previously coached and taught at San Diego High School and Willowridge High School.

“We couldn't be more excited to now have Cody as our Head Basketball coach. He cares about Victoria West and he cares about our students - he’s an outstanding teacher of the game,” said Courtney Boyce, Victoria West boys athletic coordinator and head football coach.
