Crain hosts community family event

On Friday, April 14, Crain Elementary hosted a Crain Community Family Event at Will Rogers Park from 2 to 4 p.m.

The event, El Color de Nuestros Corazones (The Color of our Hearts), was based on the theme of a children’s book written by Crain Elementary 4th-grade bilingual teacher Marta Orden. Orden’s book, titled Un Camaleón y el Color de Su Corazón (A Chameleon and the Color of His Heart), is about a chameleon who is misunderstood by other characters because they were interpreting his emotions based on his color, which changes with his surroundings. They learn that they have to look deeper into someone’s heart to understand their emotions.

This free event was open to everyone, and families were invited to visit with staff and community sponsors, socialize, and participate in various activities. Attendees were able to enjoy a skit performance based on Orden’s book by some of Crain’s bilingual teachers, community booths, food, beverages, games, and more.

Community partners Victoria Parks and Recreation, VISD Connections, Victoria Police Department, Victoria Fire Department, Victoria Public Library, Texas A&M Agrilife, Mid Coast Family Services, Victoria College, House of Joseph, and Kona Ice collaborated with Crain Elementary to make the event possible.

100 lucky attendees also won an autographed copy of Un Camaleón y el Color de Su Corazon!

“We believe that community events like these are essential to fostering a sense of togetherness and strengthening our community,” said Crain Elementary Principal Yasmina St. Jean. “It's a chance for us to meet new people, learn new things, and celebrate all the great things that make our community unique.”
