Deputy Superintendent

The Victoria ISD Board of Trustees named Michael S. Kuhrt as Deputy Superintendent of VISD Thursday afternoon. Mr. Kuhrt most recently served as the Superintendent of Wichita Falls ISD, a position he held since 2015.

As the Deputy Superintendent, he will oversee Business Services, Talent, Acquisition, Support, and Retention (TASR), Maintenance, Technology, Transportation, and Athletics.

“I am thrilled to bring Mr. Kuhrt into #TeamVISD,” said Superintendent of Schools Quintin Shepherd. “We quickly realized he is a cultural fit for our district and brings a wealth of experience into the role. We are excited to have his fresh perspective as we work towards continuous improvement in all that we do.”

Kuhrt holds over two decades of educational experience beginning in the classroom as a mathematics and government teacher. He also held positions as a secondary principal, policy and administrative services coordinator, associate superintendent, and superintendent in three public school districts. Additionally, Kuhrt served at Education Service Center Region XIII and the Texas Education Agency. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Education from the University of Texas at Arlington. Kuhrt is currently a part of the Midwestern State University Doctoral Cohort at the University of North Texas.

Under his leadership and oversight, his administrative highlights included implementing a home-based literacy program for four-year-olds, organized leadership team efforts to create a culture of accountability and performance, restructured long-term debt that led to saving funds for student initiatives, and refined the salary scale at his previous district to reflect and address market-driven recruitment and retention issues. During Kuhrt’s time with ESC Region XIII, he coordinated the formation of the School Improvement Resource Center and conducted site visits to low-performing Title I campuses.

Kuhrt has served on the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) Executive Committee since 2021 and served on the Commissioner’s Cabinet.

“I am excited to join #TeamVISD,” said Kuhrt. “I look forward to meeting staff, the community, and getting to work supporting campuses as we strive for every student to pursue their genius and find their ‘and’.”

Kuhrt will begin with the district on July 5.
