Xochitl Gonzalez Named Region 3 Secondary Teacher of the Year

Xochitl Gonzalez, affectionately known as Mrs. G, is a Victoria native, raised in a bilingual household. Her parents had no more than a 6th grade education, so it was very important to her and her family that she not only graduate from high school, but also from college. She graduated Cum Laude from Stroman High School, as well as graduating Suma Cum Laude from Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas, and has been a teacher for 25 years.

As a Spanish teacher at Harold Cade Middle School, Mrs. G has the opportunity to impact the lives of children through her love of the Spanish language. A day in Mrs. G’s classroom involves singing in Spanish, playing games, and traveling around the world through the magic of virtual reality.

Also the sponsor of Cade Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society, Mrs. G is fostering a sense of community among students. She helped the NJHS members begin events at a local nursing home. They started by singing carols at Christmas, then collected toiletries, and made care packages for residents. With her leadership, the students have taken their vision and made it a campus-wide project of love for our aging community throughout the entire year.

Here is what one student had to say about Mrs. G and her lasting impact on her students, “Mrs. Gonzalez is one of those teachers you can’t ever forget. She invests her time, money, and love into you as a student and genuinely cares if you are learning. She takes her teaching past the classroom environment, and invests in your life outside of the school doors. I was fortunate to have her teach me in fourth grade and eighth grade, and honestly, if I could take her to college with me, I would. She has always been like a second mom to me and I will never forget the impact she has had on my life.”

Mrs. Gonzalez will be recognized at the Region 3 Back to School Conference in August. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!
