In January, Mrs. Gonzales' Spanish II kiddos at Cade Middle School learned how to sew and embroider from the Quilt Guild of Greater Victoria. The students were then challenged to construct a felt skull piece utilizing skills they had learned, such as embroidery stitching and embellishments.
The Dia de los Muertos inspired pieces were displayed and voted on by community members at the Annual Quilt Show which took place this past weekend. This was the first time that this type of art work was displayed at the show; Mrs. Gonzales' said she is looking forward to making this an annual class event.
A special thank you to volunteer members of the Guild that mentored the students in this project -- Debbie Davis, Gloria Zapata, Janice Seiler, Blanche de Leon, Anna Harrison, and Billie Stehling.
The top winners were:
1st place, Natalie Cook
2nd place, Kelsey Grahmann
3rd place, Jair Zuniga
