Students Re-Create Eclipse in the Classroom

The day of the August 21, 2017 solar eclipse, students in Mrs. July's 5th grade class at Shields Elementary School learned how an eclipse occurs and had the opportunity to re-create the event using a flashlight (the sun), volleyball (the earth), and tennis ball (the moon). This activity helped them understand the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse. And, students recorded their information, such as the distance between each object and whether it created a full or partial eclipse.
After the activity, students watched the solar eclipse live via the internet.
